At AheadMG, our focus has always been on helping companies navigate complex change, strengthen their offering, and build for the future. The same thinking shapes how we approach talent.

We’re delighted to introduce AheadStart, our new apprenticeship programme designed to give people at the beginning of their careers a practical route into financial services. It combines structured study with hands-on experience, allowing apprentices to work towards professional qualifications while contributing to real client work across wealth, insurance, and the wider financial services sector. JP Morgan, HSBC, and the Bank of England, among others, have been successfully offering apprenticeships for some time now, enabling students to propel their careers forward earlier by combining academic study with practical, paid industry experience from day one.

This marks an important step for AheadMG. As the pace of change across the industry accelerates, firms need more than experienced professionals. They need a steady pipeline of capable, curious people who understand how the industry works in practice and can grow into future roles with confidence. AheadStart is about creating that pathway and it’s something we’re looking forward to embedding in our talent pipeline.

A new path into financial services

There is no single route into financial services. For some, a full-time university path is the right fit. For others, learning while working offers a more direct and applied way to build skills, experience, and confidence.

Within AheadStart, apprentices will spend four days each week working within AheadMG teams and one day studying towards a recognised professional financial services qualification. This balance allows them to build academic knowledge while gaining exposure to real delivery environments and the realities of working in a regulated sector.

From the outset, they will be part of the team, learning by contributing, observing, and developing alongside experienced consultants working across platform change, testing, delivery, and transformation programmes.

What to expect

One of the biggest gaps in financial services today is between what can be learned in the classroom and what it takes to operate effectively in a live delivery environment. Many roles require an understanding of platforms, governance, testing, and change that only comes through practical exposure.

AheadStart is designed to close that gap. Apprentices will gain a clear view of how the industry operates from the inside. They will see how large programmes are structured, how platforms evolve, how delivery is governed, and how organisations respond to regulatory and operational change. This kind of early exposure helps turn knowledge into real capability.

Over time, apprentices will have the opportunity to:

  • Work alongside experienced consultants on live client engagements
  • Build a practical understanding of platforms, delivery models, and change programmes
  • Learn how projects are planned, tested, and delivered in regulated environments
  • Develop professional skills by working with teams who lead complex transformation work

Support will be a key part of the journey. Apprentices will be guided by team members who are invested in helping them build both technical capability and professional confidence, without adding pressure. Study time will also be made available to ensure apprentices have every opportunity to succeed at work and in their studies.

Who is the programme for

AheadStart is designed for people at the beginning of their career journey who are interested in financial services and want to learn by doing.

We’re looking for individuals who are curious, motivated, and open to developing new skills. Academic achievement is important, but attitude, work ethic, and a willingness to learn matter just as much. Some applicants may be coming straight from school or college, while others may be considering an alternative route into the industry. What matters most is a genuine interest in how financial services works and a desire to build a long-term career in the sector.

Entry requirements

As with all UK apprenticeship programmes, there are a few standard requirements applicants will need to meet:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Have the right to work in the UK and meet apprenticeship funding residency requirements
  • Not be in full-time education at the point of starting the programme
  • Be ready to commit to a structure of four working days and one dedicated study day each week
  • Have GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above
  • Have completed A-levels or an equivalent Level 3 qualification

AheadStart is just the beginning. Over time, we expect the programme to grow as we continue investing in early careers and strengthening the skills the industry will rely on in the years ahead. We also expect to introduce a graduate programme as the initiative develops.

For those starting out, it offers the chance to gain qualifications, build meaningful experience, and learn from people working at the centre of platform and delivery change.
